Nyberg takes heat for chastising dead cops

Block Club Chicago, an online news organization, reports this week that former Oak Parker and Wednesday Journal contributor Carl Nyberg was removed from his position on the steering committee of the political organization Northside Democracy for America.

The report notes that the decision was made to remove Nyberg after his comment on Twitter calling Chicago police officers "stupid" after being killed in the line of duty.

Officers Conrad Gary and Eduardo Marmolejo were struck and killed by a South Shore Line train on Dec. 17, while investigating shots fired near the Metra tracks.

That same day, Nyberg tweeted, "Two people too stupid to avoid getting hit by a train were given firearms & the authority to kill people by Chicago Police Department."

Block Club reports that Northside Democracy for America announced on Twitter that Nyberg is no longer on the steering committee.

@ Burger King: One of the best gifts given to me this year is the spirited exchange between the three of us. Santa did give me a complete set of marked, bagged screws for the interior of my 67 Fastback Mustang. @ BK: I think I speak for my beloved blue shirts. This was not a circumstance that could be taught. managed or supervised, and read that to be leaderlessness, had nothing to do with incident. These were brave officers going in harms way, a path they did not have to venture upon. The officer, and I will not mention his name, who shot the kid nine times while the kid was on the ground was my fraternal brother. I stood with him, during his trial up to the verdict, when I gladly said, "Pal, you are on your own now" Mistakes happen, however this is tragic. When the police shut down, the number of innocent victims rises.Do not support your local police,rather support your local good police,both staff and line.I am against stone monuments for fallen police officers Radicals urinate on the monuments at four in the morning. The monument to fallen police officers is taking care of all their family members who need the help. The question now is, who will help Nyberg?

The comment about the CPD giving those officers "the authority to kill people" is ridiculous enough. I've known Carl to go over the top in his comments before, but this is beyond the pale. He should be ashamed. You can advocate for people's civil rights and against police misconduct, as Carl has done for years, without disparaging people who died protecting others.

(Continued) The systems approach to error management tries to erect defenses to avert errors or mitigate their effects. For instance, in this case, a systems approach would take into account the following: the high-stress of searching for a perpetrator, the high risk of the search environment and the likely risk of not recognizing the implications of a seemingly benign but major latent hazard: two railroad tracks. What happened here is analogous to an aviation disaster. In the aftermath of such a disaster (or even a near miss) all possible data is gathered and analyzed with particular focus on systems. Sure there is "pilot error" but often times systems are changed to mitigate the effects of pilot error. What may appear obvious to us as we sit in our easy chairs reading about this tragic outcome, free of the stresses the officers were under, prove not so obvious in real time. That basic realization ?" systems analysis of risk and human error ?" has led to the remarkable safety record of commercial aviation. Those lessons have carried over into fields such as anesthesiology, surgery and emergency care as well. I wonder if the CPD has a similar approach? Brian?

Mr. Nyberg just shows his ignorance when it comes to human behavior in high risk or intense situations. No doubt he has never been involved in such intense high risk activities as aviation, police or fire, or medical disciplines such as anesthesiology or emergency care. If he was he would have recognized the following well known principles of risk management. The tragic events described involving the police officers are classic examples of human error. There are two approaches used in describing the causes and management of human error. One approach focuses on the errors of individuals, blaming them for forgetfulness, inattention, or carelessness. This is exactly the approach taken by Mr. Nyberg. In high risk endeavors this approach ?" blaming the individual ?" while satisfying to many is not very productive. On the contrary it is counter productive. On the other hand, the far more useful approach to human error is the systems approach. Here the focus is on the conditions under which individuals work. The basic premise in the systems approach to human error is that humans are fallible and errors are to be expected, even in the best of organizations.

The Officers were stupid. The Officers gave their lives to a community that is prejudice against Police as a whole, rather than prejudice against individual officers who have earned the right not to be Police Officers. The two Officers should have employed the Fergueson/Parkland Effect, slowed down and let innocent citizens get endangered, hurt or die. Nyberg made no mention of the true problems contributing to the distrust of the Chicago Police, patronage, and elected officials and Chicago closing their eyes to the problems. To the Chicago Officers out there, sit back, drive slowly to calls, make paperwork, fill your work sheets with nonsense, take a half hour to check the oil and tires and damage on the squad car. Yes, some of you should not hold the position. However, most of you should bide your time and wait for the correct moment to press your issues. The lives of citizens are cheap, because that's what the citizens have chosen. Sit back and enjoy the ride, the time for you to go to work is on the horizon.
