Those of us on Facebook and Twitter see fun and informative You Tube links every day. But this is the first time I've seen something impressive enough to share and comment on here.
It came from the Facebook page of my good friend Dr. Karen Antell (formerly of Oak Park but now residing in eastern Pennsylvania). She is a doctor who walks her talk. Actually, she runs, bikes and swims it as she participates in numerous races and triathalons each year to keep herself fit.
This entertaining "visual lecture" is called 23 ½ hours: What is the single best thing we can do for our health? It is written and narrated by Canadian physician/professor Dr. Mike Evans and cleverly animated by Liisa Sorsa.
Dr. Evans interest in preventative medicine led him to explore the research on what one thing we can do that will have the greatest benefit to our overall health. Of course, the answer is exercise, which seems simple enough.
But it is easy to get confused about how much, how often and how intense. It may not be easy to get motivated to exercise, but after you watch this video you might just be willing to give it a try. Dr. Evans demonstrates through interesting visuals and legitimate research that you don't need to become a triathaloner like my friend Karen. Walking is just fine. The main thing is that you need to commit to making sure that you are only sitting or lying down for 23 ½ hours of your day. That doesn't sound too hard, does it?
If you hate to exercise, or think you don't have time, it can help to brainstorm some ideas with an active friend or a health coach to see how physical activity can be gradually, enjoyably and effectively worked into your life. You can't argue with the results.
