Simone Boutet, former assistant village attorney, now a candidate for the Oak Park Board of Trustees, has announced that she will not seek the endorsement of the Village Manager Association, a group that vets and slates candidates for local office.

Boutet is one of six candidates who have announced their intention to run for one of three at-large seats on the board. She is the second candidate, following Oak Park Township Trustee James Taglia, who has said they will not seek the VMA endorsement.

"In speaking with members of the community, I have heard that Oak Parkers are ready for independent candidates," Boutet said in an email. "Because I have a history of serving the community, and a career in municipal law and government, I have uniquely informed ideas on how to address our community's challenges. I look forward to advancing those ideas in collaboration with whomever else gets elected, but as a candidate, it is important to me that I maintain my independence."

Oak Park Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb, who also is running for reelection as village president, also said he will not appear before the VMA in its endorsement interviews.

Thank you Ms. Boutet and Mr. Taglia for possessing the integrity to represent yourselves. This should be the go-forward model for village politics to increase the level of diversity in our candidates and provide transparency into the election process.

The VMA is essentially a Soviet style one party model. It is like the Soviet Union it self - best relegated to the dust bin of history. Congrats to Ms. Boutet and Mr. Taglia for ignoring this an increasingly irrelevant relic of Oak Park politics.

I commend Ms. Boutet and Mr. Taglia on their respective decisions not to seek a VMA endorsement. A VMA endorsement has lost its luster.
