It's been about two years since WIRE music venue opened its doors on Roosevelt Road, now owners Chris Neville and Jon Smith are rolling out their own recording label – WIRE Recorders.
The popular music venue at 6815 W. Roosevelt Rd. is holding its first "record" release party on Oct. 16 and will feature EPs and performances from its first three artists – Everybody Say Yes, Terry White and Pipes.
The artists from all three acts come from Oak Park, Forest Park and Berwyn, and Neville tells Wednesday Journal that the label aims to initially focus on musicians from the Chicago area.
"One of the reasons we chose this location in the first place and that we're working in the community here is that this is really, we feel, a hotbed of musical talent right now – Chicago in general but the west side of Chicago," Neville said. "There is an abundance of really amazing musical talent and acts and ideas going on right here and that was one of the reasons that we decided that WIRE Recorders was a good idea."
He said the label aims to "spread the gospel that music is important and musical acts do not have to rely on traditional channels to succeed.
John Fournier, an Oak Park resident and member of the soul-blues-pop act Just Say Yes, said in a telephone interview that portions of their forthcoming EP were recorded at co-owner Smith's home studio and part was recorded at WIRE's in-house studio.
The label of local artists aims to strengthen the local music scene and bring like-minded musicians together, Fournier said.
"Everybody is working together to help each other and kind of become each others' cheerleaders, too, as opposed to one band here and one band there," he said. "It puts everybody under an umbrella with the same production team."
It's too early to tell when new artists will be added to the WIRE Recorders roster, Neville said – the music venue is still working on the buildout of its partially completed recording studio, which is expected to be completed sometime in 2016. But he and Smith already are talking with new artists for the fledgling label.
Neville also said that while WIRE is releasing artists' material on CD and MP3 formats, they also aim to eventually put out vinyl recordings. Doors open for the release party at 7 p.m. and the show, featuring all three acts, starts at 8:30 p.m. The show is free.
