A typewriter from 1895, some shiny new paper clips, a Masters in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago, and a historical Oak Park senior residence.  Who's the connection?  Our own DEBORAH PIERITZ, that's who.  By day you might seek her advice from behind the counter of the oldest business in Oak Park, Pieritz Bros Office Supplies at the corner of Ridgeland & South Blvd.  Founded by her grandfather in Chicago in 1895, this fascinating corner nook is an office supply store/art gallery/antique emporium that is endlessly fascinating.

But that's by day, by heart Deborah is described on her website as a "conceptual folk artist," www.deborahpieritz.com.  Not being terribly conversant with artistic categories, I'm not sure what that means, but I do know that when I look at Deborah's work, I marvel at her imaginative creations - they're whimsical, touching, complex constructions that often appear simple yet evoke deep emotions.

This Friday evening at 7 p.m., there is an opening reception at the Oak Park Arms called FOUR HORIZONTAL INSTALLATIONS by DEBORAH PIERITZ.  In fact, these are four vertical installations that will be mounted horizontally in a narrow hallway at the Arms.  The exhibit will be on display until November 30, but opening night offers an opportunity to visit with this most intriguing artist.

Deborah agreed to accept the invitation to display her work at the Arms, in part to honor the continuity of the Pieritz family to the Oak Park Arms.  It was at the Arms that her mom and dad had their wedding reception in 1947, and also where her sister and brother in law, Katie and John, held their reception in 1975.

The exhibit is in the Narrow Gallery at the Oak Park Arms, 408 S. Oak Park Ave., and can be viewed daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until it closes on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
