Hello, welcome to our blog on Fun, Free, or inexpensive Events in our area. Having lived in the Oak Park – Forest Park area for the last twenty years, with a brief hiatus in Virginia, I know and love these villages. We moved here from the city and my son, Bill, went to Whittier and OPRF and is currently attending Dominican. And, as a local real estate agent with Keller Williams in Oak Park, I have come to know and really appreciate all that our area has to offer. For the last couple of years, I’ve been running a website, www.LocalEventsinYourArea.com which has highlighted festivals, films, and the many wonderful events our villages have to offer residents. So, it’s my hope that this blog will acquaint many more people with all the fun activities in our own backyard.
Let' begin with a question. Do you love quotations? Who said the following? “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty0one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years”. Who made this pithy statement? It was Samuel Clements, better known as Mark Twain, one of America's most revered writers. Our area is going to honor his wit and wisdom with "Celebrating Twain: One Author, Three Communities". To kick-off this month-long event, come to the main Oak Park Library, 834 Lake St. on Sunday, 10/3 to see the gallery exhibit, "The Many Facets of Mark Twain". A reception for the contributing artists is from 3pm - 5pm, and all are invited to this Free Event. Later that night at 7pm, "The Tom Sawyer Suite" will be performed by the Concordia University Band under the direction of Rich Fischer at Concordia, 7400 Augusta St. in River Forest. This, too, is a free event.
There is so much more to come - films, children's activities, book-readings, lectures, we'll keep you posted. See www.oppl.org/twain for a full roster, and give us your feedback. If you want to include your favorite Twain quote, all the better! As he said, "Get your facts first, and then you can distort 'em as much as you please".
