Fenwick boys basketball has just one senior this season, E.J. Hosty.

Against visiting Leo in a Chicago Catholic League Blue game Feb. 10 on Senior Night, head coach Tony Young put Hosty in the starting lineup. The move paid off as Hosty finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the Friars’ 57-25 victory.

“Being out here with all my buddies watching from the stands was a lot of fun,” Hosty said.

“We love E.J., he played great,” added Fenwick junior Darshan Thomas, who had 10 points and six rebounds. “Being our only senior and a great leader, he will be missed.”

Fenwick (18-12, 7-6 in CCL Blue) played terrific defense, holding the Lions (7-21, 2-10) to six baskets for the whole game — all of them came in the second quarter.

“We’re locking in and doing some of the things we need to do defensively,” said Young. “I have no complaints on that note. But now, it’s not just about playing hard, it’s playing smart and learning to execute and take care of the ball on offense. Consistency is the key on both sides of the ball.”

J.T. Pettigrew had a team-high 11 points, five rebounds and three steals while D.J. Porter had eight points, five rebounds and four assists for the Friars, who are the No. 4 seed in the upcoming IHSA Class 3A De La Salle Sectional. Fenwick begins postseason play Feb. 22 against Steinmetz.

OPRF boys’ struggles continue

Three nights later at Lyons Township, OPRF (9-16, 3-7 in West Suburban Silver) fell to the Lions 72-57. Rodney Murphy, who orally committed to Illinois Institute of Technology last week, led the Huskies with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Bowen had 14 points, and Harper and Johnson each had nine.

Then on Feb. 11, OPRF lost to visiting Glenbard West 57-53. Johnson had a team-high 18 points, Murphy 12 points, Harper 11, and Alex Vincent nine rebounds and four blocks.
