Easton Bogard’s goal in the first overtime proved to be the match winner as the Oak Park and River Forest High School boys soccer team edged Maine South 2-1 on Oct. 21 to win the IHSA Class 3A Leyden Township regional title. The victory extended the Huskies’ winning streak to 10 games.
Colin Hayes also scored for OPRF, the No. 3 seed in the Glenbrook South Sectional. The Huskies (16-3) met No. 8 Lane Tech in a semifinal Oct. 25, a win would send OPRF to the sectional title match Oct. 28 against either No. 1 New Trier or No. 4 Niles North.
In Class 2A, Fenwick High School, seeded No. 3 at the Niles Notre Dame Sectional, was upset by No.6 Senn 2-1 in the Schurz Regional final on Oct. 21.
Ian Martinello’s goal gave the Friars (7-10-2) a 1-0 lead 24 minutes into the match, but the Bulldogs rallied for two second-half goals to advance to the sectional semifinals.
OPRF girls swimming
The OPRF girls swimming and diving team finished fourth at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet Oct. 22 at Lyons Township High School with 182 points.
Sophomore Sadie Murphy won the 500-yard freestyle for the Huskies in a time of 5 minutes, 5.15 seconds. She also took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.53.
Other top OPRF swimmers were senior Rebecca Dee, who placed fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.72); senior Victoria Evans, who was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.06); and senior Amanda Lane, who took fifth in both the 50 freestyle (25.34) and 100 freestyle (55.55).
The Huskies’ 400 freestyle relay of Murphy, Jessica Li, Lane and Dee finished third in a time of 3:40.19.
OPRF now turns its attention to the IHSA Leyden Township Sectional on Nov. 5.
Fenwick, Trinity swimming
The Fenwick girls swimming and diving team came in second at the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference meet Oct. 22-23 at Loyola Academy.
Sophomore Anna Doherty won the 200 individual medley (personal-best 2:08.92) and the 500 freestyle (5:09.04). Fenwick’s 200 medley relay was victorious in a time of 1:48.27.
Other swimming highlights for the Friars were turned in by senior Annie McCarthy, who came in fourth in the 50 freestyle (personal-best 24.93) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.53), sophomore Evelyn Mulvihill (4th in the 100 backstroke, 59.61 and 6th in the 50 freestyle, 25.39), senior Baileigh Racky (4th in the 100 butterfly, 59.35), senior Kailyn McHugh (5th in the 200 freestyle, 1:57.71), junior Cailey Peele (5th in the 200 IM, 2:14.31) and the 400 freestyle relay, which placed second in 3:37.26.
In diving, senior Anastasia Lerma was third with 347.30 points, followed by junior Anna Connelly in fourth with 301.80.
Fenwick’s next meet will be the IHSA sectional at Leyden Township on Nov. 5.
Trinity High School will also be at the Leyden sectional. The Blazers finished 10th at the GCAC meet with 55 points.
Senior Maddy Halloran had Trinity’s best individual showing with a 16th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.69).
