Oak Park and River Forest residents will have to look online for well-priced basics and blue jeans, as the Gap location in the Shops of Downtown Oak Park strip mall is set to close by the end of January, Gap’s parent company Gap Inc. confirmed.
“As part of our company strategy to adapt to the changing needs of our customer and growth of our online business, we are looking thoughtfully at our real estate to support the best path forward,” said Gap Inc. spokesperson Justine Jordan in a statement to Wednesday Journal.
Gap Inc., which also includes retail outlets Banana Republic and Athleta, announced during an October investor meeting a three-year plan to close 30 percent of North American Gap and Banana Republic stores. Oak Park’s Gap location, which has been open for roughly 23 years, is included in that 30 percent.
“We are closing a number of stores across the Gap Inc. fleet, including our Gap store located at Shops [of] Downtown Oak Park at the end of January 2021. We remain committed to making appropriate and timely decisions on stores that don’t fit our vision for the future of Gap Inc.,” said Jordan. “We are confident these closures will help strengthen the health of our company moving forward.”
