National Soup Day is February 4th and the community is invited to visit Sugar Beet Schoolhouse and River Forest Kitchen located at 349 Ashland Ave. in River Forest between 5-8pm for a homey evening of soup and bread.

Few local places know how to make the most of sharing food and good company as well as Sugar Beet Schoolhouse. Cheryl Knecht Muñoz, Sugar Beet’s owner and manager, is known for capitalizing on her mission to share the joys of growing, cooking and sharing food in creative ways. Muñoz is also passionate about celebrating local artisans.

To make the most of National Soup Day Karl’s Craft Soup, New Rose Catering, Lyman Ave. Bread and Mo’ Butter will be on site for the savory evening.

Karl Bader of Karl’s Craft Soup will be serving three vegetarian and vegan soups while Su Jang of New Rose Catering will dish up hearty minestrone and traditional chicken noodle soups. Hot soups, consumed on site, will be served by the bowl; soups will also be available to-go in 12-and-32-ounce containers.

Tim Giuffi of Lyman Ave. Bread will have dunk-worthy breads on hand as well. Giuffi’s naturally leavened small-batch sourdough breads will be sold for cash only; whole sourdough loaves will sell for $8, while individual ciabatta rolls will sell for $2 each. Cora Pearl of the kid-owned company Mo’ Butter, will help you get your slather on with her honey-citrus and garlic-herb compound butters.

To finish off your meal in sweet style, Sugar Beet Schoolhouse’s Bakeshop Bakers will offer a brownie bar featuring toppings like ice cream, unicorn dust and sprinkles. Bring cash for the brownies and know you are indulging for a good cause—all brownie bar sales benefit the Sugar Beet Schoolhouse scholarship fund.

You can even snag a souvenir to commemorate your soup-filled evening. Artists Shilin Hora and Amanda Tanaka will be on the second floor of the schoolhouse screening cotton shirts and towels with a design celebrating their National Soup Day celebration. Bring your own towels and shirts to screen.
