The peace vigil is back. For more than a decade, the front steps of First United Church of Oak Park was the site and a familiar sight for local activists assembling peacefully to promote peace, starting with the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. Well, Good Friday seemed like a good time to reconvene, so Bob Haisman, a veritable force of nature, is calling for people of all faiths to gather at 7 p.m. on April 19 at 848 Lake St. in Oak Park for Prayers for Peace.
“All are welcome to join us in prayers for the end to violence on our streets,” Haisman writes, “and prayers of remembrance of the victims.” Leading the vigil will be Rev. Deborah Kapp, First United Church’s pastor, along with reflections on gun violence from Anthony Clark, OPRF teacher and founder of Suburban Unity Alliance.
The signs will be made by First United Church School’s third-graders.
