Nestled in the North Avenue District, The Onion Roll Restaurant and Deli, has been an Oak Park mainstay for more than half a century. Known for generous deli sandwiches, matzo ball soup, and breakfast favorites like blintzes, bagels and lox, this charming, family-owned establishment caught the attention of the Chicago Tribune this week.

The Onion Roll’s hot corned beef sandwich was named among the 17 best served in Chicago according to, Trib contact reporter, Louisa Chu. The Jewish deli’s sandwich ranked 11th on Chu’s list and she seemed to appreciate the no-frills offering for its straight-forward nature; hot, locally sourced, Eisenberg corned beef, piled high on rye bread and served with a pickle for $7.85.

A deeper look at The Onion Roll’s menu indicates you can take your corned beef sandwich to the next level by ordering a deluxe, open-face, Ruben sandwich dressed up with kraut and Swiss cheese. Indecisive folks may enjoy the North Avenue Nosh, a sandwich, comprised of both hot corned beef and hot pastrami available in both “earthling” and “spaceman” sizes.

The North Avenue District is delighted that The Onion Roll has been recognized for the excellence of its corned beef sandwich;” says chair of the North Avenue District, Judith Alexander, ” but the quality of this sandwich is not news to us, of course!”

Alexander proudly considers the cash-only restaurant to be the “go-to place for excellent deli food” in the western suburbs and is personally partial to The Onion Roll’s pastrami sandwich and corned beef hash.
