UPDATE: Our friends at Rare Bird are super popular. According to a recent Instagram Post their 2/10 macaron workshop is sold out. Stay tuned for more opportunities to take a class at their Harrison Street space.
Not to be confused with coconut macaroons, French macarons, are elegant and versatile cookies suitable for enticing your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. The airy morsels are made from an egg white meringue, almond flour, and sugar and should be crisp and smooth on the top, while soft and chewy on the inside. All that softness comes from properly formed “feet”–yep, feet–that ragged ruffle at the bottom of each properly made macaron shell.
Macaron shells come in every color of the rainbow and creating a proper macaron requires two shells to be sandwiched together with a flavored filling nestled between them. Traditionalists may lean toward a vanilla cream filling while eccentric bakers have created wasabi, bloody mary and even cheese doodle flavored macarons! No matter if you keep your cookies lighthearted or sophisticated they are complex little nibbles and more than a little tricky to make.
Thankfully our friends at Rare Bird Preserves are hosting a macaron making workshop at their Harrison Street shop on Sunday, February 10th. Thanks to their expertise folks can learn the science behind making these classy little cookies just in time for Valentine’s Day!
The two hour hand-on class will allow guests to make naturally dyed macaron shells and fill them with assorted fillings like salted caramel, buttercream and assorted Rare Bird Preserves, of course! In addition to taking home a bundle of freshly made macarons, students will be offered an assortment of artisan cheese, crackers, preserves, wine, and Prosecco during class!
How sweet is that?
