The Fenwick and Oak Park and River Forest High School boys basketball teams had high hopes for good reason regarding the Class 4A state playoffs. Both teams dominated their conference opponents en route to a league title and both teams established a winning formula of defense and teamwork during the regular season.

Despite landing in the stacked Riverside-Brookfield Sectional, the Friars (No. 4 seed) and Huskies (No. 3 seed) appeared well-positioned to win a regional and perhaps even the sectional. If either team advanced that far, a state championship isn’t that far fetched.

Unfortunately, none of those aspirations were realized this season as both teams lost in regional finals on Friday, March 2. Proviso East defeated Fenwick 83-70 with an incredible shooting display and Lincoln Park edged OPRF 74-70 with an improbable shot.

Proviso East controlled the action against Fenwick from start to finish with impressive shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. The Pirates’ Trevor Moore scorched Fenwick for 35 points, highlighhted by eight 3-pointers.

DJ Steward lead Fenwick with 26 points and Damari Nixon contributed 13 points.

At Lane Tech, OPRF led 37-30 at the half, however, could not hold off Lincoln Park the rest of the way. The Lions won in overtime on a 40-foot shot to stun the Huskies.
