The acronym STEM stands for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Research shows that girls tend to lose interest and confidence in STEM subjects as they pass through elementary school. The Science Club will work to combat this by ensuring that at least half of the participants enrolled in their STEM programs are girls. Awake also strives to provide a top notch Science Club to children from low-income families who may lack access to this type of programming.
With the grant, Awake will look to hire, train and oversee program aides from Youth Crossroad’s Youth Leadership Program (YLP). Awake’s Science Club will provide young leaders from the YLP with leadership opportunities in a supervised setting. Using the assistance from YLP aides, Awake will provide instruction to up to 30 participants each day, with an overall goal of instructing 50 participants per each 9-to-12-week session. In order to keep the program affordable, Awake offers sliding scale tuition.

About the BDC’s Philanthropic Program
The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) provides charitable contributions to causes within the Berwyn community. The BDC makes awards to local not-for-profit public charities, giving priority to those efforts that positively impact economic vitality, provide services directly to beneficiaries, address root problems and serve disenfranchised groups. Berwyn headquartered not-for-profits can make application for funding throughout the year as needs arise with awards based upon available BDC funding. For more details regarding the philanthropic program, call the BDC at 708-788-8100 or visit berwyn.net.
