The good news is Oak Park is busy planting trees. The bad news is that over 40% of them are non-native. As far as the birds and butterflies are concerned, one might as well plant plastic Christmas trees. Female butterflies don’t recognize non-native trees and won’t lay their eggs on them, which means there will be fewer butterflies. Worse still, even seed-eating birds like cardinals feed their babies insects, and butterfly caterpillars are a large part of their diet. That means fewer birds.
Nature is under assault everywhere and non-native plants aren’t helping. If nature dies, we die. There are plenty of good native trees to plant, we shouldn’t be spending tax dollars to be part of the problem.
