West Suburban Medical Center (West Suburban) received the top grade in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2016 Hospital Safety Score. West Suburban continues to be a “Straight A’s” hospital as this is the hospital’s 9th consecutive “A” score. Only an elite group of hospitals in the entire nation have achieved straight A’s in the Hospital Safety Score since the initiative was launched in June of 2012.

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses process and structural measures as well as outcome measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D or F score, representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in April 2016, with 44 percent receiving a C grade or lower.

An A grade is one of the most meaningful honors a hospital can achieve, and one of the most valuable indicators for patients looking for a safe place to receive care. The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, nonprofit hospital safety watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

“The 9th consecutive A score is an achievement West Suburban Medical Center wears proudly,” said Roslyn Lennon, RN, MSN, Chief Nursing Officer. “This is an accomplishment, which comes from years of dedication to quality care. Our team of skilled and compassionate providers has built a culture of safety at West Suburban. We are excited to share our achievement with Oak Park and surrounding areas. Patient safety and satisfaction truly are a part of our organization’s DNA.”

“We are very proud that West Suburban’s unrelenting commitment to our patients has been recognized by a well-known, independent organization,” said Patrick Maloney, CEO. “Patient safety requires constant vigilance and the 9th consecutive A in patient safety score highlights the tireless commitment of our staff and physicians to providing our patients with care that is safe and of the highest quality.”

The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, offering a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades on the website. Now, for the first time, patients can also review their hospital’s past safety performance alongside its current grade on the Hospital Safety Score site, allowing them to determine which local hospitals have the best track record in patient safety and which have demonstrated consistent improvement.
