Wayne Banta, 61, a longtime Oak Park resident, died on Feb. 27, 2016. He began his career with the Oak Park Police Department in 1977, was a detective and also worked as a financial crimes investigator. He was promoted to the positions of patrol sergeant and detective sergeant, and retired as a commander after 30 years of dedicated service to our township.

He graduated with honors from De Paul University in Chicago and was first in class during his initial police training. He received the Ervin H. Warren Award for Excellence as a recruit police officer and continued to receive numerous department citations and letters of appreciation throughout his long career. 

He will be fondly remembered by his loved ones, friends, and fellow officers. 

Wayne Banta is survived by his wife, Valerie (Canavan); his sister, Laverne (Andriolo); and his many adoring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene and Wayne Banta, and his first wife, Patricia Banta (Quirk). 

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 4 from 3 until 9 p.m. at Oak Park’s Drechsler, Brown, & Williams Funeral Home, followed by private interment.
