Joan Giegerich Stone, 85, formerly of La Grange, who lived the last 12 years of her life in Oak Park, died on Feb. 19, 2016. Born on Sept. 18, 1930 in Joliet, she graduated from Joliet Township High School and then attended the University of Illinois Pharmacy School. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in La Grange, Infant Welfare Society of Chicago La Grange Chapter (past president), La Grange Community Nurse Health Center (past president and co-founder of the Corner Shoppe), Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry volunteer, and a member of PEO Chapter EW. She had a love of Mexico and resided in Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit, Mexico on a part-time basis and had many adventures there with friends, who became her extended family.
Joan Stone is survived by her daughter, Sarah (Tim) Cooke; her grandchildren, Samuel and Claire Cooke; her sisters-in-law, Barbara Giegerich, Kathleen Giegerich, and Jean Stone; and her numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edwin R. Stone; her parents, John and Gertrude (Gierich) Giegerich; and her siblings, Roger Giegerich, Dr. Clare Giegerich, and Dr. Joyce Anderson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Grace Lutheran Church in La Grange. The family appreciates memorials to the La Grange Community Nurse Health Center, Grace Lutheran Church, Boxer Rebound in Ringwood, Illinois, the Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry, and the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado.
