Berwyn, IL (October 2015) The Berwyn Development Corporation’s (BDC) Berwyn’s Best competition began in September and was fixed on finding the best local Combo Italian Beef/Italian Sausage sandwich. Buona Restaurant (6745 W Roosevelt Rd; buona.com) walked home a winner with its signature combo. The sandwich starts with Italian sausage and all-natural Italian beef made from the original Buonavolanto family recipe on just-baked Italian bread. The sandwich is then topped with hot giardiniera and sweet peppers and lightly dipped in gravy.
Buona Restaurant went up against other local favorites Big Guys Sausage Stand, Bubba’s Place, Carla’s Place and Novi’s Beef. The final competition brought together a group of local judges for a taste-test event to compare each specialty combo side-by-side based on flavor, texture and presentation. Judges included Chris Lopez of Masa Uno, Inc. Tortilleria, Jeff Dahlgren of 3D Collision Repair, Alicia Plomin of the Wednesday Journal, Kathy Hurst of Hursts’ Berwyn Jewelers, Flor Infante of La Fleur Spa and Mayor Robert Lovero. Their scores along with a public poll determined the contest winner.
Don Buonavolanto reacted to the award, “With Buona Companies strongly rooted in the Berwyn community, it’s an honor to hold the title for Best Combo. Quality is of the utmost importance to us and it’s rewarding to see the family recipe succeed.”
