Right there in the lobby, ready for members, guests or residents of the West Cook YMCA to grab, is the daily dose of fresh fruit. Could be an artfully stacked triangle of bananas. Or it might be apples or pears. Or whatever is in season.

But every day for the past several months, the YMCA, 255 S. Marion St, has been offering up fresh fruit to all takers. Phillip Jimenez, the Y’s CEO and president, said it just feels right. He says an organization focused on health ought to offer up a healthy snack and that he was tired of watching kids come out of an activity and head for the vending machines.

So the Y now orders 12 cases of fresh fruit a week from a local grocer. And then they just watch it disappear.
