Settin’ the woods on fire

Bellwood resident Leslie E. Todd, 47, was arrested by River Forest police and charged with arson on Aug. 2, River Forest police report. Police were called out to the intersection of William and Central to respond to a nearby brush fire at 4:02 p.m. A witness identified Todd as the person who started the fire, which damaged a fence. Todd admitted to setting the fire and to starting another fire at the location the previous night. The damage was estimated at $3,398, police report.

 Aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle

Jairo Pineda, 20, of Chicago, was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and other traffic-related charges, according to River Forest police. At 8:14 p.m. on Aug. 2, an officer observed Pineda commit an unspecified traffic violation in the 7700 block of Division. A computer check revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen. 

 Aggravated DUI/Aggravated battery to a police officer 

A River Forest police officer witnessed Abraham Montiel, 37, of Bensenville, consuming alcohol at a Shell gas station at 7201 W. North Ave. on Aug. 5 at 2:45 a.m., River Forest police report. The officer approached Montiel, who became aggressive and spit on the officer. Additional cans of liquor were later found in the vehicle. It was later determined that Montiel was driving without a license. He refused a field sobriety test and Breathalyzer test at the police station. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, aggravated DUI, DUI, no valid driver’s license, assault to a peace officer and several traffic violations.

 Burglary to garage

A residence in the 900 block of Hayes was burglarized on Aug. 10 between the hours of 7:05 a.m. and 6:40 p.m., according to Oak Park police. The burglar entered the garage through an unlocked service door and stole a black and silver Craftsman lawnmower valued at $200.

 Burglary from motor vehicle

A 2003 Silver Mercedes Benz E320 was burglarized on Aug. 10 in the 200 block of S. Grove between 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., according to Oak Park police. The burglar entered the vehicle through an unlocked door and stole $3. 

A 2015 Chevrolet was burglarized in the 1100 block of S. Oak Park Ave. sometime between 3 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 2:01 p.m. on Aug. 11, according to Oak Park police. The burglar defeated the rear door lock and stole a Makita toolkit containing a screw gun, drill, circular saw, saw zaw, flashlight and charger. The loss was an estimated $650.

A 2003 Infiniti was burglarized in the 1100 block of N. East sometime between 8 p.m. on Aug. 9 and 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 10, according to Oak Park police. The burglar stole $4 in cash and several CDs. The loss was estimated at $24.

A 2008 Ford was burglarized in the 200 block of Superior sometime between 9 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 11, according to Oak Park police. The burglar entered the garage of a residence through an unlocked door and accessed the garage door opener. The burglar then stole a blue and silver men’s KHS Brentwood bicycle and a pink specialized women’s bicycle. The loss was estimated at $615.

 Theft 

Two bicycles that were left unlocked were stolen from the rear yard of a residence in the 800 block of N. Lombard on Aug. 11 between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., according to Oak Park police. A blue men’s Hardrock mountain bike and a white Diamondback mountain bike were stolen. The loss was a combined $600.

 Residential burglary

A resident of the 400 block of S. Taylor reported coming home to find a man between the ages of 35 and 40 fleeing through the rear door of the residence, according to Oak Park police. The burglar entered the apartment through an open window adjacent to a window air-conditioner. No loss was reported.

 Theft of motor vehicle

A silver and black Cadillac Escalade was stolen from the rear of a residence in the 400 block of S. Lombard sometime between 7 p.m. on Aug. 11 and 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 12, according to Oak Park police. The loss was $27,000.

A 1999 green Toyota Corolla was stolen from the 600 block of Wenonah on Aug. 12 between 3 p.m. and 3:04 p.m., Oak Park police report. The thief stole car keys from a purse in the front seat of a friend’s unoccupied vehicle parked at the 600 block of Wenonah and used them to steal the Toyota, police report. The loss was $1,000.

 These items, obtained from the Oak Park and River Forest police departments, came from reports filed Aug. 2-17 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.
