Armed robber in a gold Impala

Oak Park police reported that a newer-model gold Chevy Impala pulled up beside a male pedestrian walking in the 1100 block of North Austin Boulevard around 11:15 a.m., July 26. According to reports, the driver, between 40 and 50 years old, asked to borrow a cigarette lighter, and then pulled out a semi-automatic pistol, demanding the victim’s money. The victim handed over a wallet containing $100, and the Impala proceeded southbound on Austin.

 Jewelry heist

Overnight, July 16-17, burglars broke into a jewelry boutique in the 100 block of North Marion Street, disabled video cameras and made off with an unknown amount of jewelry from display cases and a safe, which was drilled open. Loss was not immediately available.

 Auto crimes

An unlocked vehicle worth $28,000 was removed from its parking spot in the 1200 block of North Grove Avenue, overnight July 22-23. Chicago police found the car with keys in the ignition in the 1700 block of North Mayfield Avenue at 3 a.m. that morning and arrested one person.

On July 24, Oak Park police arrested a Chicago juvenile who was spotted removing a wallet from a parked vehicle in the 500 block of South Harvey Avenue.

An unlocked Toyota Prius parked in the 800 block of Lake Street between 5 and 5:30 p.m., July 24, was relieved of an Apple laptop left in plain view. Loss was valued at $1,200.

Someone smashed the rear window of a 2014 Ford Focus parked in the 500 block of South Lombard Avenue, overnight July 24. Damage was estimated at $250.

A vandal punctured a car tire and made scratches on a 2003 Chevy S-10 parked in the 400 block of South East Avenue, overnight July 24-25. Damage was estimated at $1,190.


An unlocked apartment door in the 800 block of Washington Boulevard was entered July 17 between noon and 4 p.m. The owner found the bedroom ransacked, a safe broken open and jewelry and valuables missing.

A Smith and Wesson handgun was removed from the center console of a car parked in a locked garage in the 400 block of South Elmwood Avenue. Loss was $645. 

July 22, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., two residences in the 900 block of South Lombard Avenue and the 100 block of Garfield were broken into by means of a pry tool forcing open door locks. Computers, jewelry and other valuables were removed.

Jewelry, power tools and prescription meds were stolen in a July 17 apartment burglary in the 300 block of Washington Boulevard. Burglars entered via unknown means. Loss was estimated at $3,600.

A 23-year-old man from Chicago was arrested and charged with theft after being caught removing two bicycles from underneath a porch in the 200 block of Chicago Avenue around 7:30 p.m., July 25.

On July 24, around midnight in the 400 block of Iowa Street, police caught a male juvenile, age 17, in possession of a red mountain bike that had been removed from the front porch of a house in the 400 block of North Marion Street July 22. He was charged with theft.

An unsecured black men’s Giant Iguana bicycle disappeared from a yard in the 700 block of South Lombard, the evening of July 2. Loss was estimated at $250. 

A locked women’s bike with a child seat was stolen in the 500 block of Garfield Avenue, July 23.

A 15-foot section of copper downspout was removed from a business in the 600 block of South Oak Park Avenue, July 15-19. Estimated loss was $500.


Around 5:30 p.m. July 24, a victim complained that an unknown 18-year-old male grabbed her buttocks in the 300 block of Harrison Street and fled.

 DUI/drug busts

A 55-year-old man from Forest Park was nabbed in the 6000 block of Roosevelt Road around 11 p.m., July 24, and charged with aggravated DUI.

A 21-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 11:30 p.m. July 24 in the 1000 block of North Oak Park Avenue for driving under the influence and charged with DUI and resisting arrest.

A 28-year-old tourist from LaPorte, Colorado was picked up for possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia around 1:15 p.m., July 25, in the 100 block of Van Buren Street.

 These items, obtained from the Oak Park and River Forest police departments, came from reports filed July 22-27 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.
