Oak Park’s favorite bookstore for young readers — Magic Tree Bookstore at 141 N. Oak Park Ave. — has been named Chicago’s best children’s bookstore by Chicago Magazine.

The magazine notes: “This whimsy-heavy spot does the typical kids’ bookstore one better: It hosts weekly storytelling sessions (Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.), runs immersive day camps (this summer’s theme: superheroes; $40 for four sessions), and offers a monthly writing workshop ($40) for pintsize J.K. Rowlings.”

Magic Tree owner Beth Albrecht said in a telephone interview said she suspects that Chicago Magazine sent in staff to the store in recent weeks because one day “people were asking a lot of questions about what we do and were looking around.”

Albrecht, who purchased the store earlier this year, said the recognition is “a testament to the store that’s been here 30 years.”

“The store has deserved that award for many, many years,” she said. “It’s a very special place.”
