An Oak Park resident on trial in Bali for the murder of his girlfriend’s mother in a luxury hotel in Bali last year, told the court Thursday that he bludgeoned her with a metal fruit bowl, according to the Associated Press.
Schaefer said the incident occurred during an argument between the two last August, when the victim, Sheila Von Wiese-Mack, asked her daughter, Heather Mack, 19, to abort the couple’s unborn child.
He told the court that Von Wiese-Mack also used a racial slur against Schaefer and “described her daughter as a prostitute who liked black men,” according to the AP story.
Von Wiese-Mack choked Schaefer for about 30 seconds before he assaulted her with the fruit bowl, he said.
The couple put Von Wiese-Mack’s body in a suitcase and left it in a taxi outside the hotel. They later fled the scene and were soon captured by authorities. Both face the death penalty by firing squad if convicted.
