The Oak Park and River Forest High School wrestling team advanced all 12 of its wrestlers that competed at the Glenbard North Sectional to the IHSA Individual State Tournament (Feb. 19-21 at the State Farm Center in Champaign).

Jason Renteria (32-2 record/113 pounds), Alex Madrigal (34-4/120), Gabe Townsell (31-6/126), Jaime Hernandez (29-7/132), Larry Early (22-0/145), Isaiah White (32-0/152), Matt Rundell (30-3/160) and Allen Stallings (14-1/220) each won a sectional title at his weight class over the weekend. Rollian Sturkey (17-3) and Ben Bergen (28-13) also advanced to state with runner-up finishes at 182 and 195 pounds, respectively. The Huskies’ remaining state qualifiers, seniors Max Metzgar (31-12/170) and SaVonne Bennette (29-9/138), earned third place in their division.

Fenwick boys basketball

The Friars advanced to the semifinals of the Chicago Catholic League playoffs with a 52-44 win over St. Ignatius on Sunday.

Junior guard Mike Smith scored 24 points and junior forward Mike Ballard contributed 20 to power the Friars (20-6) past visiting Brother Rice 62-41 in the first round of the Chicago Catholic League playoffs. Smith and Ballard made 15 of 19 free throws, collectively, against the Crusaders.

OPRF boys basketball

The Huskies notched a pair of conference wins against York 49-42 and Proviso West 66-46 over the weekend. OPRF (13-9, 6-5 West Suburban Silver) is on a three-game winning streak.

“We are playing our best basketball right now,” OPRF coach Matt Maloney said. “After our huge upset of Lyons Township, we wanted to show we were past the letdown phase that plagued us earlier in the year. We clearly demonstrated that we can string together quality performances and our playing our best basketball at the right time.”

OPRF Hockey

Four varsity players from the OPRF Hockey Club have been invited to try out for the 2015 Illinois High School Showcase team. George Brennan, Blaine Burkett, Mike DeAlba and Anthony Rorres participated in tryouts through Feb. 17 at Center Ice in Glen Ellyn. The Showcase roster will be finalized from a group of over 100 elite varsity players from throughout northern Illinois.

This year’s Showcase tournament will be held in Pittsburgh in April and feature top high school talent from across the United States. Players will also have the opportunity to play in front of scouts and coaches from almost every collegiate and junior hockey program in North America.

OPRF Huskies Hockey Director Dave Dyson will once again serve as head coach for the Illinois Showcase team. Dyson’s team won last year’s Showcase tournament, finishing with a perfect 6-0 record.

In the Illinois West Founders Division playoffs, The OPRF varsity routed Plainfield 9-3 as Mike DeAlba, Liam Burns, George Brennan, Teddy Economos, Paul Kovatchis and Matthew Javor led the Huskies’ offensive onslaught. The Huskies’ JV topped the Plainfield JV 3-2 in a tough, physical contest at Ridgeland Common. Will Anderson scored the winning goal with 37 seconds left in regulation.

Sports Trivia Night for local charities

The St. Giles Men’s Society is holding its 7th Annual Sports Trivia Night on Feb.  21 at the St. Giles grade school gym. Doors open at 5 p.m. with a 6:45 p.m. start time for trivia. Started in 2009 by a small group of parishioners, the competition consists of teams of up to six players that vie to correctly answer the most sports-related trivia questions.

John Lipic, who brought Sports Trivia to Oak Park, describes the questions as “spanning all generations and the wide world of sports.” Sports Trivia has grown in popularity each year and Lipic promises that “this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever!”

Proceeds from the event will be used to support local charities. This year, Sports Trivia 7 is partnering with HighSight and Parenthesis Family Center. Event information and registration details can be found online at
