The Oak Park and River Forest High School wrestling team is so good they typically have to travel out of state to truly test themselves. Tournaments like the Walsh Ironman in Ohio and upcoming Clash in Minnesota pit the Huskies against the nation’s best.

The Huskies, the reigning Class 3A champs provided another reminder why they are clearly the team to beat in Illinois, cruising to the 49th annual Rex Whitlach title hosted by Hinsdale Central over the weekend. OPRF scored 294 points, well ahead of runner-up Sandburg which scored 243 in the 24-team tournament

OPRF junior Isaiah White won the marquee title match at 152 pounds by beating Hinsdale Central’s Juwan Edmond 10-4. Earlier this season, White edged Edmond 4-3 in a dual meet at Hinsdale Central.  In Class 3A, White and Edmond are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, according to Illinoismatmen.com

In mid-December, White (14-0) became the first OPRF wrestling to win an individual championship at the Walsh Ironman tournament.

Seeded No. 2 in the 152-pound class, White won five matches to qualify for a finals showdown against Vincenzo Joseph from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. White edged the top-seeded Vincenzo 3-1 in overtime to win the title.

While White is off to an excellent start this season, the Huskies also do their damage by committee. Jason Renteria (113), Alex Madrigal (120), Matthew Rundell (160) and defending state champion Kamal Bey (170) also won their weight classes at Whitlach.
