Vehicle fire on N. Oak Park Avenue, Dec. 16

Oak Park firefighters were summoned at 11:06 p.m., Tuesday, to the 100 block of North Oak Park Avenue, where a 2000 Mercury on the west side of the street was engulfed in flames. The smell of burning rubber was pronounced from half a block away.

Witnesses said two men were talking to police after the fire was extinguished around 11:15 p.m. One of them nodded when asked if it was his car. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Oak Park Fire Chief Thomas Epson said Wednesday the Mercury had extensive damage to engine and front compartment, but there was no immediate cause of the fire known. Damage was estimated at $3,000.
