Oak Park resident and former Chicago litigator Lynne Adams-Whitaker (L.A. Whitaker) addresses race, gender and poverty in her new book The Chit’lin Coast: A Tale of Growing Up Black and Female in Mid-Twentieth Century Chicago.
As a black woman growing up in a poor Chicago neighborhood in the 50s, the book’s main character Kim Washington “refuses to crumble against the walls society places before her,” Whitaker writes in a short story synopsis.
The Chit’lin Coast is available on Amazon in paperback and for Kindle as well as at Oak Park bookstore The Book Table, 1045 Lake Street. A copy of the book has also been added to the local authors collection at the Oak Park Public Library according to Whitaker’s husband Al Whitaker.
