The location that was once home to Competitive Foot, 102 N. Marion St., will remain a shoe store with the introduction of Fleet Feet Sports.

Fleet Feet Sports-Chicago owner and CEO Dave Zimmer said in a telephone interview that the 1,800-square-foot store is expected to open by Christmas 2014.

Zimmer said in a news release that Fleet Feet looks forward to “running the next leg of the race and continuing the relationships The Competitive Foot started with Oak Park’s fitness community 40 years ago.”

Competitive Foot closed up shop earlier this summer, with owners Tim and Tyna Eggert announcing their plans to retire.

Zimmer said Fleet Feet also is opening a new store in Chicago’s Southport shopping district later this year, bringing the local chain’s size to six retail stores in the Chicago area. The Carrboro, N.C.-based franchise has 126 stores nationwide, Zimmer said.

“The [Oak Park] building’s 1920s Art Deco look and feel really draws you in, and we plan on creating an equally welcoming recreation/multipurpose room inside to go along with our expanded sales floor,” Zimmer said.

He said the shop uses a device that measures the walking and running styles of its patrons to determine “how the footwear is going to perform for them.” Zimmer said the company wanted to be in Oak Park in part because of the vibrant running community in the village and a number or races held every year.

“Really what our business is all about is community,” he said. “And Oak Park has an amazing running community.”
