Governor Pat Quinn, on May 8, announced the construction of a new North Avenue bridge where it crosses the Des Plaines River. James McHugh Construction Co., the lowest of six bidders, has taken on the task of building the bridge for about $9.8 million.

“Travel in River Forest, Elmwood Park and Melrose Park will be safer and more efficient with this new North Avenue Bridge,” said Quinn in a news release.

Both representatives Camille Lilly and Emanuel Chris Welch said they expect the new bridge to improve safety and handle the amount of traffic.

Construction will also take place at the intersection of North and Thatcher avenues.

The project is part of Quinn’s $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program.
