It would be hard to find better news on an editorial page focused on business growth in Oak Park than the Journal’s report Monday afternoon that Pete’s Fresh Market will close on the shuttered Lake Street Dominick’s store before this month ends.
We admit to a certain thudding sense of discouragement at the news in the late fall that Dominick’s would close all its stores and that the Oak Park store was not among the first snapped up by either Jewel (with two other stores already in the village) or the oh-so-hot Mariano’s. Yes, we worried that Oak Park’s east side store would linger long.
But no. Pete’s, a small family owned chain, likes us just the way we are. To hear Stephanie Dremonas, Pete’s CEO, talk about how the diversity of this store’s customers — Oak Parkers and Austinites — was a lure not a worry is exhilarating to us.
