Looking forward to another big sports weekend watching the Huskies, Friars and Blazers in action. I’ll be at Fenwick tomorrow night, Friday, to check out some Fenwick wrestling against St. Patrick, St. Laurence and St. Ignatius, followed up by Fenwick boys basketball hosting Brother Rice.

I saw the Friars hoops squad play against Normal U-High and star Keita Bates-Diop last weekend at the Chicago Elite Classic, and I came away fairly impressed with Fenwick in the early stages of the Rick Malnati era. The team is missing Northwestern signee Scott Lindsey (out with an injury), but seniors Dan Dwyer and Tom Planek have done an admirable job holding down the paint at both ends of the floor. Sophomore point guard Mike Smith continues his quick maturation as the Friars’ do-it-all leader on the perimeter. The Friars’ strength of schedule is quite impressive. After hosting Brother Rice, Saturday should be even tougher for the Friars who will square off against Benet.

The OPRF boys basketball teams hosts Hinsdale Central and Schaumburg this weekend, while the lady Huskies compete at the Naperville North Tournament. The Fenwick girls basketball team hits the road to compete in the Sterling Tournament. Undefeated Trinity collides with Vernon Hills at Whitney Young in the Chitown Showdown. We’ll have Wednesday Journal freelancer, Lauren Recchia, on the scene to cover the Blazers who feature multiple Division I prospects led by De Paul commit Lauren Prochaska.

Finally, the OPRF wrestling team will be in Ohio to compete against some of the nation’s best in the Ironman Invitational.  For a complete listing of the remaining games for this week, see our Wednesday Journal sports calendar, sponsored by Midtown Athletic Club. Good luck, Huskies, Friars and Blazers!
