Victim punches man with gun
An unknown man, roughly 18 years old, approached a 40-year-old man around 3 p.m. in the first block of Pleasant Avenue, Nov. 10, displayed a black handgun and said, “What’s good?” The victim struck the offender who fled.
“I wouldn’t recommend [fighting an armed perpetrator],” said Oak Park Police Commander LaDon Reynolds. “When faced with an armed attacker, it’s best to comply.”
Robbery
- Two unknown men approached a victim in the 100 block of South Harvey Avenue around 6:15 p.m., Nov. 13, and demanded a cellphone. The victim gave up a white Motorola Droid Razor X phone and the offenders fled northbound on Harvey. Estimated loss is $250.
- An unknown man approached a woman sitting on the Green Line train around 11:30 a.m., Nov. 7. He reached into her jacket pocket and removed her iPhone. The offender also reportedly tried to snatch her backpack but was not successful. He jumped off the train at the Ridgeland station and fled.
Thefts
- A cellphone, backpack and leather Knights jacket were removed from a locker at Brooks Middle School, the morning of Nov. 7. Loss was estimated at $490.
- A purse was removed from a business in the 400 block of North Harlem Avenue, Nov. 10 around 4 p.m.
- A juvenile was arrested at Oak Park and River Forest High School, Nov. 15, in connection with a theft that occurred Oct. 25. He was turned over to a parent.
- An iPhone was removed from a gym bench at the West Cook Y, 255 S. Marion St., the evening of Nov. 12. Someone took a coat containing car keys and credit cards from the Y on the evening of Nov. 14.
- Someone removed a cellphone from a work bag at Jewel, 7036 W. Roosevelt Road during the afternoon, Nov. 14.
Burglary
- Oak Park police arrested Jose A. Vasquez, 34, of the 5200 block of S. Whipple in Chicago, Nov. 9, in connection with three burglaries that took place that day in the 500 block of South Euclid Avenue and the 100 block of South Oak Park Avenue.
- Police arrested George Goodwin Jr., 49, of the 4900 block of West Rice Street, Chicago, after responding to a burglar alarm at the Clark gas station, in the 300 block of Chicago around 2:30 a.m., Nov. 9. Police reportedly found Goodwin hiding in the gas station utility room. He was charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools.
- Someone located a hidden key, entered a home through the rear door in the 800 block of Erie Street, Oct. 26-31 and removed golf clubs, clothing, toys, a DVD player, laptop and stereo equipment. Loss was unknown.
- Someone kicked in the rear door of a house in the 500 block of South Humphrey and ransacked the residence, Nov. 7, during the day. No loss was reported.
- Someone pried open the back door of a house in the 800 block of South Harvey Avenue during the day, Nov. 9, and removed two laptops and a silver Tiffany necklace. Estimated loss was $2,250.
- Someone removed the 1.5 x 2.5 foot window of a house in the 800 block of South Humphrey during afternoon, Nov. 15. Nothing was removed, but a patio door was found ajar.
- Someone climbed onto the balcony of a building in the 900 block of North Boulevard during the evening, Nov. 15, and entered an apartment via the broken sliding door. Offender(s) removed $800 from a jar kept in a chest. No other loss was reported.
- A burglar alarm sounded when persons unknown entered a business suite by forcing open a door in the 6400 block of North Avenue between midnight and 1:30 a.m., Nov. 17. No loss was reported.
Unlocked garage burglary roundup
Two unlocked garages were burglarized in the 600 block of South Lyman Avenue, overnight Nov. 15-16; in the 600 block of South Taylor Avenue, overnight Nov. 13-14; from the 100 block of North Scoville Avenue, overnight Nov. 6-7; and in the 1100 block of Clarence, overnight Nov. 7-8.
Bike thefts
- An unlocked bike was taken from a rear yard in the 900 block of South East Avenue during the day, Nov. 8. A locked bike was removed from a back porch in the 900 block of South Maple, the night of Nov. 13. A locked bike was removed from the 1100 block of South Oak Park Avenue, overnight Nov. 9.
- Police arrested a Chicago juvenile for theft of a bicycle taken in the 700 block of North Harvey Avenue around 9:30 p.m., Nov. 13. He was processed and turned over to his grandmother.
Auto mischief
- An Oak Park teen, 16, was arrested on Nov. 9 for removing a tan 2005 Chevy Malibu parked in the 200 block of Lake Street. The car was recovered, inoperable, in the 1100 block of South Harvey Avenue. He was issued a court date and turned over to a parent.
- Someone pried open the window of a 2000 Mercury parked in the 6500 block of North Avenue, the afternoon of Nov. 13. An iPhone was removed.
- An unlocked car was burglarized in the 1000 block of North Kenilworth Avenue, the morning of Nov. 17.
- Someone removed a green 1995 Toyota Avalon parked in the 1100 block of South Humphrey Avenue around midnight, Nov. 8.
These items, obtained from the Oak Park and River Forest police departments, came from reports filed Nov. 6-17 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.
