The following is a letter to Gov. Pat Quinn, resulting from a 117-0 Illinois House vote and a 52-0-6 (not voting)-1 (present) Senate vote. Both Oak Park’s Senator Harmon and Rep. Lilly voted Yes.

Dear Governor Quinn:

Illinois Vaccine Awareness Coalition (IVAC) members ask you to veto HB 3190 (schools-meningococcal vaccine) mandated for sixth- and 12th-grade boys and girls for the following reasons:

1) Three meningitis vaccines’ ingredients include:

a) alcohol

b) formaldehyde

c) thimerosal (49.6% mercury)

d) yeast extracts

2) Two meningitis vaccines have not been evaluated for cancer or gene mutation potential or for fertility impairment; one meningitis vaccine has not been evaluated for male fertility.

3) Two meningitis vaccines vials’ stopper contains dry natural rubber latex which may cause allergic reactions in latex-sensitive individuals.

4) Three meningitis vaccines’ adverse reactions include:

a) anorexia

b) brain and spinal cord inflammation

c) Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)

d) seizure

IVAC members understand that parents and legal guardians can object to this mandate based on personal religious beliefs or medical objections.

Will you veto HB 3190 — for our children’s sake?

Barbara A. Mullarkey
President, IVAC
