OPRF girls track and field
McKenzee Kroeschell capped off her Huskies career in style by taking second place in the pole vault clearing 12 feet at Saturday’s Class 3A state finals. Lake Forest’s Carly Schmidt claimed the state title (13.00). Kroeschell, the most prolific pole vaulter in OPRF history, will compete at Wichita State next season.
OPRF sophomore Hannah Gorin finished 40th (11 minutes, 55.48 seconds) in the 3200 meter run at state.
Fenwick girls track
The 3200 meter relay of Megan Cahill, Brianna Daley, Arriana Arroyo and Olivia Ryan earned sixth place, recording a time of 9:31.24 at Saturday’s Class 2A state finals. Ryan also finished sixth in the 1,600 meter run (5:12.84) as the Friars scored 10 points to land in 28th place overall with three other schools.
Fenwick boys track
Patrick Yerkes ran the 3200 in 9:52.64 to finish second at the Fenwick Sectional, hosted by Concordia last week. Benet’s Anton Vershay (9:41.67) took top honors in the distance event ahead of Yerkes, the Friars’ lone qualifier for this weekend’s state finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
OPRF baseball
The Huskies salvaged a tough week at the Do It Stevie’s Way tournament with a 5-4 win against Marian Catholic on Saturday to earn 11th place in the prestigious event, loaded with state contenders.
In other games at the tournament, OPRF lost to New Trier 5-0, St. Rita 7-6 and Lemont 6-5.
Against Lemont, the Huskies scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead, but the Indians rallied with four runs in their half of the frame to pull off Friday’s improbable 6-5 victory.
Fenwick girls water polo
The Friars’ bid for a three-peat at the state tournament fell short as Mother McAuley nipped Fenwick 8-7 in the quarterfinals last Thursday at Stevenson.
Trailing 7-3 entering the fourth quarter, Fenwick rallied with four unanswered goals to tie the game 7-all. The Mighty Macs’ Kristen Kleist scored the game-winner with 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Colleen Barron, Cara Borkovec and Alexa Ovalle led the Friars, who have won four of the last six state championships.
OPRF boys tennis
The Huskies edged Maine South 25-21 to earn first-place honors while Fenwick (16 points) came in third at the OPRF Sectional on Saturday. OPRF’s No.1 doubles team of Jeremy Dixon and Graham Lehman rolled past the Friars’ Jack Ryan and Colin Fitzpatrick 6-1, 6-0 in the title match. The Huskies’ tandem of DJ Arends and Jonah Philion beat Maine West’s Dominic Budzik and George Stoitzev in the third-place match to punch their ticket to state.
In No.1 singles, Brandon Wozniczka of Taft defeated OPRF state qualifier Miles Blim 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match.
Fenwick girls soccer
The Friars crushed host De La Salle 7-0 in a Class 2A regional title game. Fenwick takes on Glenbard South today (4:30 p.m.) in the semifinals of the Riverside-Brookfield Sectional.
OPRF boys volleyball
The Huskies dropped their regular season finale to Lyons Township, 23-25, 18-25, last week.
OPRF (16-18, 3-3 West Suburban Silver) opens the playoffs against the winner of Cristo Rey vs. Farragut at the Cristo Rey Regional this week. Argo and St. Laurence meet in the other regional semifinal, with the title match slated for 7 p.m. tonight.
