Jack, Ruth and Sarah

I am the organizer of all family events. I am the shuttle bus to dance, soccer, golf, birthday parties, lunch and movies.

I am the house cleaner. I am the lunch maker. I am the alarm clock.

I sweat the small stuff. I cover little scrapes with little band-aids.

I have a bubble of a yell right under my throat at many moments during the day. I’m jealous of others who walk casually through the small daily stresses with ease, anxiety free.

I hate the spring, love the winter, love the summer and hate the fall. I think joyfully about the beginning of summer and worry about how long will stretch on.

I want to be cool, but not too cool. I want to be stern, but not too stern. I want to be fun, and still maintain my air of authority.

I’m in love with the smell of my children’s hair when it’s wet. I like the smell of their breath as they wake up in the morning.

I am most happy when they have played so hard they are filthy dirty and look outrageously unkempt.

I am the hero of their night terrors. I am the superwoman of water in the middle of the night.

I am very afraid for my children.

I don’t handle their bumps and bruises well. I wait, breath held, for their fevers to break. I cry for parents that have lost their children and hold mine a little too tightly when news breaks.

I am grateful for how they have shaped my soul. My children have helped me be more patient with the human condition.

I care more and love more than I ever thought possible.

I am a mom. I love that I am a mom.
