Carol Luella (West) Pittman, 76, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and a former longtime resident of Oak Park, died on April 18, 2013. Born on Jan. 28, 1937 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Alice (Laughead) and Carl West, she was a 1959 graduate of Drake University. She taught in Des Moines and Lake Mills, Iowa; Chinon, France; and Oak Park; everything from preschool level to GED prep for military personnel.

In 1960, she married Phillip Pittman in Chinon. They had been set up as a blind date to attend the Drake Relay Dance. They were happily married for 52 years. Drawing upon her own experience as a Girl Scout, Carol volunteered to be the cookie chairman of her daughter’s Brownie troop. Girl Scouting became a passion, and she ultimately rose to the position of president of a Girl Scout council that served 14 Chicago suburbs. In 2002, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Girl Scouts of America.

Always involved with her church, she served in many positions in the congregations to which she belonged.

Recently, she was a member of the High Desert United Methodist Church in Rio Rancho. For many years, she volunteered in the toy department at Oak Park’s Economy Shop, a charitable resale shop. Her love and passion for life were evident throughout her family activities and volunteer service.

Carol Pittman is survived by her husband, Phil; her children, Michael (Tara), Michelle (Tony) and Douglas (Janice); her seven grandchildren; and her sister, Bonnie (John III) Friedmeyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Alice West; and her sister and brother-in-law, Dennis and Sandra (West) Elings.

Visitation will be held on April 26, 2013 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel and Mortuary in West Des Moines, Iowa with a funeral service on April 27 also at the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association of New Mexico, 9500 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Suite 121, Albuquerque, NM 87111 or to a charity of your choice.
