Note to self: Next time you stop in for a bagel at Bruegger’s at 5:30 in the morning, or a workout at FFC, do not park directly in front, in one of the metered spots. Although there are no signs anywhere on the block regarding this, the village overnight parking ban is enforced until 6 a.m. Unfortunately, parking is also prohibited during this time in the public lot across the street.

I understand the reasons for an overnight parking ban (keeps streets clear of inoperable vehicles and prevents abandoned cars, helps citizens maintain police enforcement in their neighborhood, allows for street cleaning, etc.) and I support this policy by parking in my garage every single night of the year. I just don’t think it makes sense to ban parking in front of businesses that are hoping to have patrons at 5:30 in the morning.

I imagine it must be very frustrating for the businesses in Oak Park that open before 6 a.m. to look out upon a sea of unused yet forbidden parking. Maybe it’s as frustrating as walking back out to my vehicle at 6 a.m. to find a $30 ticket on the windshield.
