The Lake Theatre First Tuesday Film Club has just announced the February selection of “Searching For Sugar Man,” a film that has been named an Oscar nominee for “Best Documentary”. This monthly film club presentation is slated for Tuesday, February 5th at Noon and 7 PM, with tickets priced at $6 for matinee/seniors and $8.50 for adults. Advance tickets are available online or at the Lake Theatre Box Office, located at 1022 Lake Street in Oak Park.
“Searching For Sugar Man” (PG-13) is the awe-inspiring story of Sixto Rodriguez, a talented musician who was dropped from his label in the early seventies, but unwittingly became a star in South Africa, serving as a voice of the anti-apartheid movement. Despite a coveted four-star rating from Billboard, Rodriguez’s first album hardly sold any copies, and he was quickly dropped from his label. While he quietly returned to a life of relative anonymity in working class Detroit, his albums somehow made their way to South Africa, where his music spread like wild fire.
Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul splits the documentary between Cape Town and Detroit, interviewing prominent South Africans to showcase just how influential the music of Rodriguez was on the country. Rumored to be dead by suicide, in the ’90s a couple South Africans set out to discover what became of their beloved star. The resulting story is a heartening journey about a man who had all but abandoned his dreams of musical fame and success, finding his place long after he began. Lake Theatre’s noon showing will feature discussion leader Joe Barillari. The discussion leader for the evening show will be Doug Deuchler.
On the first Tuesday of each month, the Lake Theatre presents afternoon and evening screenings of documentary, foreign, art house, or classic films at Noon and 7 PM.
