Knife recovered after offender flees when cabbie has no cash

A cab driver told police he picked up a man in Chicago and was told to drive to Oak Park the early morning of Oct. 22. The driver was guided to Ashland Avenue and Madison Street in River Forest, where the man threatened the driver with a closed knife and demanded money. He also said he had a gun that he would use if necessary. The driver said he had no money and the offender fled the cab on foot. The suspect’s knife was recovered from the cab.

Criminal damage to property

Someone damaged a vehicle in the 400 block of North Austin Boulevard the early morning of Oct. 16. Estimated damage is $400.

A pry-type tool was used to damage the driver’s side door of a vehicle in the 200 block of South Grove Avenue overnight Oct. 16. Estimated damage is $1,000.

A 21-year-old Chicago man was charged with criminal damage to property after breaking a window and a mirror in an apartment in the 1000 block of North Austin Boulevard. The man knew the resident and the dispute was domestic. Estimated damage is $115.

Theft

An unknown person removed a silver and green Schwinn Ranger Master bike which was locked to a light post in the 1000 block of North Boulevard the afternoon of Oct. 16. Estimated loss is $170.

A witness observed an unknown man using a silver object to peel Illinois registration stickers off several vehicles in the 200 block of South Maple Avenue the night of Oct. 16. Estimated loss is $100.

A champagne 2000 Dodge Intrepid was removed from the rear of the 1000 block of South Harvey Avenue overnight Oct. 16. Estimated loss is $1,000.

A red and black Specialized women’s bicycle was removed from a yard in the 1000 block of Washington Boulevard the night of Oct. 17. Estimated loss is $600.

Someone removed a red and white Novara bicycle that was locked in the 900 block of Wisconsin Avenue the afternoon of Oct. 18. Estimated loss is $350.

A green Schwinn 1970s men’s bicycle was removed while secured to a bike rack in the 1100 block of South Boulevard between the afternoon and night of Oct. 18. Estimated loss is $400.

A white 1991 Honda Civic that was parked and unattended in the lot at Starbucks in the 7200 block of Lake Street was removed the morning of Oct. 15.

Someone cut and removed the catalytic converter from a 1998 Dodge Ram that belonged to the River Forest Community Center between the evening of Oct. 12 and afternoon of Oct. 15.

A woman eating at Panera Bread in the 7300 block of Lake Street the afternoon of Oct. 19 told police someone removed her wallet from her purse that was hanging on the back of her chair. The purse contained $4 in cash, a driver’s license, student ID and a debit card.

Burglary

An unknown person entered a vehicle in the 1000 block of South Ridgeland Avenue the evening of Oct. 17 and removed a black Banana Republic purse that contained an Apple iPod Touch, a blue wallet, credit cards, a CTA pass and an Illinois driver’s license. Estimated loss is $200.

Someone broke a window to unlock the dead bolt lock of a residence in the 1200 block of Harvey Avenue between the morning and night of Oct. 18. The offender broke a first floor window in the rear of the house and the basement door was pried open. The power was disconnected, the house was ransacked and $500 in cash and miscellaneous jewelry were removed. Estimated loss is $8,500.

An unknown person entered a garage in the 1100 block of South Maple Avenue between the evening of Oct. 5 and morning of Oct. 18 and removed the registration sticker from the victim’s yellow Yamaha motorcycle. Estimated loss is $30.

A man claiming he was doing construction work entered a residence in the 300 block of North Lombard Avenue the morning of Oct. 20. He was observed going into the basement and emerging with a bicycle and Bosch tool case, but both items were left behind as the offender fled. No loss was reported.

Someone entered an open garage in the first block of Washington Boulevard overnight Oct. 19 and removed a maroon 27-inch Schwinn men’s bicycle. Estimated loss is $240.

Hand held power tools and a pink Huffy 26-inch girl’s bike were removed from an open garage in the 1100 block of South Lombard Avenue the morning of Oct. 20. Estimated loss is $240.

An HP laptop computer was removed from the front seat of an unlocked car parked in the 400 block of Park Avenue Oct. 16. Estimated loss is $4,500.

Someone removed an Apple iPad from an unlocked vehicle parked in the River Forest Town Center parking lot the afternoon of Oct. 17. Estimated loss is $800.

Public indecency

A man approached a woman walking her dog in the 900 block of South Maple Avenue the morning of Oct. 21, pulled his pants down and exposed himself before he fled eastbound.

Battery

A 16-year-old boy turned himself into police the morning of Oct. 18 for his involvement in a fight in the 700 block of Lake Street on Oct. 10. An 18-year-old and a 15-year-old boy had previously been arrested for their involvement in the fight, which stemmed from a prior dispute.

Robbery

A man came into the 7-Eleven in the 600 block of South Boulevard the early morning of Oct. 22, said he had a gun and demanded money from the registers. The employee placed both register tills on the counter and the offender removed the currency. Estimated loss is $100.

These items, obtained from the Oak Park and River Forest police departments, came from reports filed Oct. 16-22 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an apprehension.
