Joan Enyart Scheltens, 58, of Oak Park, died on Oct. 7, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 8, 1954, she graduated from Trinity High School in 1972, earned a B.S. from Dominican University in 1976, and received her Master’s in Education, also from Dominican.
Besides her family, her passion was teaching. She taught biology at Morton West High School in Berwyn for over 20 years. Affectionately known as “Mrs. S” by her students, she leaves a far-reaching legacy of kindness, humor, and the pursuit of lifelong learning.
Joan Enyart Scheltens is survived by her husband, Peter Scheltens; her children, Ashley, Jake and Kelly; her siblings, Barbara, Marilyn, and Richard (Tricia) Enyart; her sister-in-law, Georgia Cook; and her nieces and nephews, Connie and Dom Cook and Natalee and Gina Enyart. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Patricia (nee Heneghan), and she was a special niece, cousin, and friend of many.
Her family wishes to extend a special thanks to the students, faculty, and staff at Morton who supported her with love and kindness during her three-year battle with ovarian cancer.
Visitation was held on Oct. 11, with a celebration of life service at Peterson-Bassi Chapel, Gamboney & Sons Directors. Her final resting place will be in your heart.
