The Fenwick girls tennis team warmed up for the Oak Park Sectional taking place in a few weeks by slipping past the sectional’s host, OPRF, 4-3 in a dual meet last week.

Fenwick’s No. 2 and No. 3 positions at both singles and doubles won out. At No. 2 singles, senior Marta Shoorgot defeated freshman Hannah Gibson 6-1, 6-1. Kaelin Schillinger, a junior, defeated sophomore Anna Rossa 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.   

At No. 2 doubles, Fenwick seniors Catherine Joss and Molly Wallach defeated Dominique Walker and Audrey Angelos 6-3, 6-2, while Dana Balk teamed up with Tierney Vrdolyak to defeat Anne Claire Cronin and Isabel Anaya 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

OPRF’s Samantha Schafer defeated Ana Sprajcer at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2. The Huskies’ doubles team of Taylor Arends and Tess Trinka defeated Laura Gutierrez and Mia Sullivan 6-2, 7-6. OPRF’s third point came at No. 4 doubles where Jessie Klugman and Caroline Cronin edged Annie Krug and Rachel Heuel 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The two teams will meet again in the sectional on Oct. 12 and 13.

OPRF soccer

Pat Callahan netted a penalty kick and Okker Verahagen scored off an assist from Dan Gryzlo to give the Huskies a 2-1 win over Kelly at Oak Park Stadium on Thursday night. The nonconference victory pushed OPRF’s record to 7-5-1 on the season.

OPRF hockey

The OPRF hockey team took second place at the Gator Cup Fall Classic in West Dundee.  The Huskies defeated New Trier White 3-1 in the semifinal. The Trevians scored the game’s first goal just 2:04 into the game. OPRF responded in the second period on a goal from Nick Rorres with assists from Tyler Haas and Brian Wilson.

In the third period, while OPRF was short-handed, Haas stripped the puck from a New Trier defenseman and punched in the game-winning goal. Matt Schmidt then scored the insurance goal with an assist from Ian Sutherland. Goalie Wiley Lauerman thwarted 15 of 16 shots.

Trinity volleyball

The Blazers upped their record to 4-1 in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (Red) and 14-5 overall with a 25-20, 25-17 win over Resurrection last week.

Senior outside hitters Ashley Klaus and Mikayla Leyden combined for 21 kills and both finished with 11 digs apiece. Jacque Kibir-Evans added six kills and four blocks for the night. Shannon McGinnis had 10 digs to go along with three kills and four block Madi Creaden led the team in assists with 19.

Fenwick soccer

Fenwick runs record to 7-6-0 (2-1-0) CCL defeating St Rita on strength of there goals by Jack Alberts. Jacob Peterson and Matt Eifert combined in goal for 5th shutout. Goalkeeper Jacob Peterson recorded his fourth shutout and Jack Alberts scored the winning goal as the Friars edged Mt. Carmel 1-0 last week. Alberts scored off an assist from Dylan Kramer with 8:13 remaining in the second half.
