The Oak Park park district is still waiting on village approval before the former Aldi grocery store at 25 Lake St. can be demolished to make room for what will become a new gymnastics center.
Neil Adams, the park district’s project manager, said Oak Park village staff are “swamped” with projects, but will review the project plans and safety issues before they grant the demolition permit. A permit from Cook County has already been granted, he said.
Mark Burkland, the park district’s attorney, said Thursday it appears the village will allow for the use of North Boulevard as a turnaround for the gymnastics center’s parking lot. Burkland said he hasn’t heard anyone in the village say no as of yet, and Arnold said agreement has been drafted that the park district is waiting for the village attorney to sign.
Arnold added that a previous option to use a portion of North Boulevard behind the center for storage is off the table.
“That discussion has ceased,” she said because the street is needed for access to the adjacent car wash.
