Some people give credit to or blame God for everything that happens in life. Others see God as taking a more hands off approach. Either way there are theological problems. It usually boils down to the theodicy problem. How can God be all powerful and loving at the same time when we witness such human suffering?
God and Natural Disasters” Focus of Free Ecumenical Roundtable Public Lecture
On Friday, April 27, 2012, the Ecumenical Roundtable on Science, Technology and the Church will host a presentation from Rev. Dr. Terence E. Fretheim on the topic of “God and Natural Disasters.” Fretheim is a professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary and author of the book, Creation Untamed: The Bible, God, and Natural Disasters.
The 7:30 p.m. lecture will be held on the first floor of The Lutheran Center, 8765 W. Higgins Rd., Chicago, IL 60631, near O’Hare Airport. Responding will be Dr. Gene Rasmusson, a world-renowned atmospheric scientist and professor emeritus of the Department of Meteorology at the University of Maryland.
The lecture is part of a series of meetings of the Ecumenical Roundtable on Science, Technology and the Church, which is a group of protestant denominations that host an annual dialogue on faith and science issues. This year’s roundtable is hosted by the Lutheran Alliance for Faith, Science and Technology (http://www.elca.org/What-We-Believe/Social-Issues/Faith-Science-and-Technology.aspx).
