The St. Luke School eighth grade boys basketball team took first place in the Classic League championship on Saturday with a 42-30 over St. Giles at Guerin Prep.

The championship day was made all the more memorable when the Classic League’s eighth grade Most Valuable Player Award went to St. Luke’s Sam Francis.

Francis was named MVP and won the Bertolini Award based on votes from the league’s eighth grade coaches. The award is named for Len Bertolini, a 40-year coach at St. Ferdinand School in Chicago. Bertolini was on hand to present the award to Francis.

St. Luke’s fifth and sixth grade boys basketball teams also finished the season in strong fashion, snaring second place in the championships with tough, hard-fought games against St. Giles. They took home the hardware with second-place finishes in regular-season play.
