Cluster Tutoring has several students on its wait list who would like a volunteer tutor, either Tuesday or Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Many of the students on the wait list are quite young — kindergarten through second grade. (We also have a few older students, grades 3 through 11.)

This is a great opportunity to reach out to a very young child before he or she gets behind in school. It’s a chance to develop a love of reading in a young one, to make sure he or she can count, and knows the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. And you don’t have to worry about explaining trigonometry or the laws of physics.

Cluster Tutoring has been providing free, one-on-one tutoring for students from Chicago’s Austin community for more than 20 years. Many of our tutors have been involved with Cluster for three or more years and find they get as much out of the program as the students. The atmosphere is supportive, friendly and relaxed.

The commitment involves one 90-minute session each week through mid-May. Volunteers can come either on Tuesday to the Pine Avenue Church (5460 W. Augusta in Chicago) or on Thursday to First United Church of Oak Park (848 Lake St.).
