Well, it appears there’s a first time for everything, even when it comes to cancelling events at OPRF High School due to snow. All basketball games at every level scheduled for tonight at OPRF against Glenbard West have been cancelled due to the extensive snow fall.

OPRF Athletics Director John Stelzer said he received a call from Glenbard West school officials at around 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon wanting to cancel the games due to hazardous traveling conditions.

“I didn’t think we would have to but they are cancelled,” he said. “We’ll look at rescheduling the games as soon as possible.”

The varsity game was expected to be a West Suburban (Silver) Conference showdown between the Huskies (10-4, 4-1), who are coming off a disappointing loss to Lyons Township, and the Hilltoppers (10-2, 3-1), who began the season winning 10-straight games before dropping their last two.

The Huskies host Morton on Tuesday night (7 p.m.) for a conference crossover matchup. The game will coincide with Coaches vs. Cancer, a fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. Spectators are encouraged to wear purple for the event.

“We’re hoping to raise money and awareness for a great cause,” said OPRF head coach Matt Maloney, whose friend Danielle Villari Swets is organizing the fundraiser. Swets, who resides and works in Oak Park, was diagnosed with cancer her junior year while attending OPRF High School.
