I am not a Christian, but as an educated American, I am familiar with some of its history, practices and controversies. I remember Christians who, in the name of their religion, threw themselves in front of troop transports headed for Vietnam or marched to end racism. I remember Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Theresa.
Today, the hate-mongering politicians on the right “prove” their credentials as Christians by strident support of the death penalty and gun culture and denying basic social services to the poor. There must be Christians who want to reclaim their religion from this vitriol, but they remain silent.
