I appreciate that Mr. French [‘Gateway’ drug argument is flimsy, Viewpoints, Oct. 12] read my letter on thinking before we promote alcohol [Viewpoints, Oct. 5]. Wikipedia gives a good “pros and cons” for the gateway drug theory, citing a variety of studies. Under alcohol: “It is rare for those who use hard drugs to not have used alcohol or tobacco first.” Statistics are very strong that there is a relationship though whether it’s a causal relationship is argued.

If we care as much about our children as about our adult rights, let us be thoughtful, not impulsive, in opening up the floodgates to alcohol. Alcohol and guns should not be handled in an offhand manner.

If we err, let us err in the direction of acting slowly, for the sake of the children and the general well-being of all.
